This Conference will have wide appeal for people working in the Justice system, for academics and anyone interested in social justice and gender equality.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

Professor Patricia Easteal, Professor of Law, University of Canberra

Dr. Hannah McGlade, Human Rights Lawyer and Academic

Ms. Robyn Westgate, Ph.D student with a background in Criminology focusing on female offending

Speakers have been carefully selected to help us better understand:

  • The lived experiences of women in prison
  • The drivers of incarceration of women (especially for Aboriginal women – whose situation has been described as a ‘national crisis’)
  • How we might more effectively bring about change.

"This is a very important issue because women are critical to family and community and there are serious consequences when they are taken out of these roles." (Robyn Westgate)

This Conference has been organised by a consortium of Western Australian Soroptimist International clubs (SI Maylands Peninsula, On The Terrace and South Perth) working together to help address critical issues related to the incarceration of women in Western Australian prisons.

Tickets are available at https://women_in_prison.eventbrite.com.au

A limited number of scholarship positions is available. Please email simaylandspeninsula@siswp.org to apply.
